What the pros are saying:

What I’m saying:

  • I like the attention Collison is getting so far this year, and how it has translated to a renewed intensity on the part of the Thunder, specifically with their interior defense.  He highlights the reality that, sometimes, stats don’t tell you anything at all about what players mean to their squads.  But when you watch the team before and after, it’s easy to see the impact.  Consider guys like Rick Mahorn, Charles Oakley, and PJ Brown.  It is difficult to pinpoint any statistic that says they should matter, and yet they did in very measurable ways.  Collison is the same way.
  • Greg Oden and Yao Ming: two guys whom the NBA desperately needed and were betrayed by their bodies.
  • Luis Scola might be the goofiest #1 scoring option in the league.  No, wait.  We still have White Mamba.

Game time tonight.  Get primed.

What the pros are saying:

What I’m saying:

  • One of the great things about classic scorers in the NBA is how their games evolve over time.  The 17 year old Kobe Bryant would not even recognize the 32 year old Kobe Bryant’s game.  What great scorers do, and the perimeter players especially, is learn how to economize their offense as they grow older.  They learn that much of their offensive movement of their youth is wasted energy.  Right now, I think Kevin Durant is wasting a lot of offensive energy when he doesn’t need to.  Like I’ve written before, I think it stems from the fact that for him, shooting the ball is incredibly, mystifyingly, easy.  Far easier than anything that we could understand being easy.  So it is difficult for him to simply turn away from what he knows most easily comes to him.  But that is what he is going to have to do – he is going to have to economize his game.
  • Westbrook finally gets a break against elite point guards, with the next game providing the likes of Jrue Holiday.  Hopefully he’ll be on his Magic Carpet Ride all game long.  Whatever that means.
