I think it’s safe to say that the Thunder are a better team than they were the first time they played the Spurs.

Guess what? So are the Spurs.

I confess that I was not able to watch most of this game.  Though what I did see, I kind of wish I could un-see it.  We wanted a measuring stick, and what we got was a clinic on how to dominate.  The Thunder never had a chance in this game from mid-way through the 1st quarter on.  It is sobering to think that, what the Thunder did to the Nets the other night, the Spurs just did to them, but in an even more dominating fashion.

If we must look at some numbers, here you go:

  • The high point total by quarter was 21 in the 4th.
  • under 33% shooting from the field, and only 1-7 on threes.
  • 10 total team assists contributed to 28 field goals.
  • Westbrook had only two assists against 6 turnovers.

Aside from these frightful statistics, the one thing that always stands out to me about the Spurs is their personal and team discipline.  The Thunder players are prone to a lot of overcommitment on defense, which culminates in broken assignments, frequent commitment to pump fakes, and back door cutting openings.  The Spurs simply don’t make those kinds of mistakes, so they give up very few cheap points.

And so we have a measurable gap between the best of the best and where the Thunder are now.  Sobering, yes.  But necessary in order for the Thunder to figure out what they want to be.

Next game: vs Memphis on tuesday, January 4 at 8:00PM EST
